Dopo il blocco di Megaupload e Megavideo, è arrivata l’ora di abbassare la saracinesca anche per Filesonic. La censura colpisce un altro importante portale di caricamento e condivisione file multimediali, che negli ultimi mesi aveva registrato una moltiplicazione degli utenti e, di conseguenza, del proprio giro d’affari. Un domino che ha colpito dapprima i siti di Kim Schmitz per poi travolgere, inevitabilmente, tutti i siti che fornivano servizi simili se non identici.
Il portale di Filesonic contava ben 250 milioni di pagine viste al mese. La blogosfera è in pieno allarme dopo l’arresto del proprietario di Megaupload e ha fatto luce sulla dibattuta questione della pirateria informatica, che avrebbe fatto perdere alle industrie musicali e cinematografiche milioni di dollari di guadagno. La pratica del file-sharing, dunque, è messa con le spalle al muro: oltre a Filesonic anche Fileserve e Uploaded.to sono stati oscurati negli Stati Uniti e ora i rispettivi team sono a lavoro per spostare i servizi in Oriente, precisamente ad Hong Kong. Secondo quanto sta accadendo, gli internauti temono anche la chiusura di altri portali di condivisione e caricamento file come Mediafire, Movshare, Videobb, NovaMov, VideoWeed, Rapidshare.

La replica del mondo del web più selvaggio tuttavia non si è fatta attendere, e la comunità hacker Anonymous ha risposto all’azione del governo attaccando diversi siti di altro profilo con un attacco coordinato in pochissimo tempo e basato sulla tecnica del DDos Attack. I siti interessati dalla rappresaglia di Anonymous in conseguenza della chiusura di Megaupload sono stati quelli della RIAA, MPAA, Universal Music Group ed il Copyright Office degli USA.
La rapidità dell’azione di Anonymous è indice certo della rabbia collegata alla vicenda Megaupload, di fatto dando inizio alla protesta che è andata poi a mischiarsi inevitabilmente al movimento già in atto sul web contro la proposta di legge Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), alla quale il gruppo Anonymous si oppone già da mesi.
Tornando a Megaupload, si legge negli atti che il portale è stato chiuso per infrangimento di copyright, riciclo di denaro, e racket, insieme ad altri capi di accusa collegati all’uso illegale di materiale stretto da copyright. L’azione è stata commentata dal FBI come “una dei più grandi casi di infrangimento di copyright mai viste dagli Stai Uniti, che colpiscono direttamente un sistema di storing e distribuzione pubblica che favorisce ed induce al crimine legato alla proprietà intellettuale”.
Negli atti si legge che l’attività illegale è guidata da due figure, il già citato Kim Schmitz e Kim Tim Jim Vestor, entrambi residenti contemporaneamente ad Hong Kong ed in Nuova Zelanda. In altri documenti legati alla vicenda si legge che MegaUpload.com è indicato come un sito commerciale e di servizi che riproduce e distribuisce copie di contenuto sotto copyright popopolare attraverso Internet, senza alcuna autorizzazione.
Inoltre, si indicano le organizzazioni collegate a MegaUpload come parte di una “Mega Cospiracy”. Si stima che la presenza di MegaUpload sia sinora costata ai detentori dei diritti di copyright circa 500 milioni di dollari in danni, mentre la compagnia ha guadagnato circa 175 milioni di dollari, con oltre 1 miliardo di visitatori nella sua storia, e 180 mila utenti registrati.
